Monday 15th June – Travel rain then sunny periods
Still bucketing it down on the Loire and nowhere near enough thunder to
make it in the least bit entertaining!! Decided to leave our planned bike
ride to Sancerre for another time and packed up without even leaving the
van as it was torrential! Drove our usual route north but at Rouen decided
to detour and for a change go up the free motorway to Dieppe and have an
amble along the coast between there and the Somme. Big mistake, the route
out of Rouen in that direction goes right through the middle of the city!!
It was very congested and the motorway we needed was quite a way outside:(
Still we got through there and had a nice visit to the beach at Puys near
Dieppe and enjoyed the rock pools and huge white cliffs. Carried on on the
roads which are nearest to the cliff tops and enjoyed the scenery. There
was nowhere for us to wild camp along there – just huge gatherings of the
white elephant style campers which had been herded into the regulated
spots. We decided to go to one of our past favourites, the small car park
on the canal which runs between St. Vallery and Abbeville at Petit Port.
We had good old egg and chips for a late tea as we didn’t get here until
nearly 9. It is amazing here, the sun didn’t go down until nearly 10 and
it was light till nearly 11! The weather is a lot better up here:)
Tuesday 16th June – Bike ***** sunny – St. Vallery, Baie de Somme
A beautiful day. We got the bikes off and headed along the Canal to St.
Vallery which is a lovely place. We have been a few times and love it –
it is from a very by-gone era and very elegant. We biked through the small
town along the prom and out onto the track which takes you round the Baie
of the Somme. We managed to find an inner farm track so didn’t really
see anyone else along here. Just duck decoys and weird hides that float!
We arrived at the lighthouse where we were yesterday – Le Hourdel. We
pushed our bikes along the beach – all big stones and flints which have
come out of the cliffs over millions of years. We found a good place for
lunch and even had some seals bobbing around right in front of us. There
were two kite surfers just along the beach too. Carried on on paths
towards Cayeux sur Mer passing the lighthouse at Brighton. We went along
the prom reading the French town names on the many identical beach huts
along the front. Biked out onto the Nature reserve for a little way before
turning round and coming back along a similar route but on the bike tracks
and roads instead of the beach. We passed the huge camper aire near
Hourdel and thought how lucky we were to be out of that nightmare!! Packed
in really tight – only feet between them! Came into the back of St.
Vallery through the medieval cite. Got back to the van 33 miles later and
6 hours out! There were several people in the car park including an
English couple from the lake district who told us about a Stork nest about
10 minute walk up the canal path on the opposite bank. We packed up the
bikes and the van and walked to have a look – amazing nest on a tall dead
tree stump and Mum and baby cleaning each other – very sweet. As we
walked away Dad flew round looking for food we supposed. Left that car
park to find another one we saw on our bike ride along the canal path –
not far from the one we were in but about 4 miles round by road at a place
called Saigneville. Smaller car park miles from anywhere and away from the
road so perfect:) Relaxed and ate the cakes we bought in Lidl yesterday.
Amazing sunset straight down the middle of the canal at about 10 o clock.
Great day.
